Disaffected Suite by Rhythm In Mind
Abstract four song analog experiment EP.. The outcome of drums, analog synths, mangled distortions, & questionable sanity.
Back Story: I’m about to turn the page & enter a new musical direction. Over the past couple months I’ve had to reevaluate my methods & tools for creating music. I was finding myself dissatisfied with both the process & final outcome. So I worked out my method, reasoning, & invested in some tools to help that process along. Before I start this next phase I’ve created this abstract four song analog experiment from the music created during this “testing” period. I found these four tracks to have recurring themes & worked well in series. (Similar drum feels, Rhodes lines, & chaotic bass/synth phrases).
Some have heard these as works in progress & premasters. For those that haven’t you might find something to enjoy or relate with. All in all it’s an interesting flow of noize.

Well I hate that it uses USB but I think more Mandalas will be added to the wish list.

I just acquired two OverStayer “OS” stereo FET compressors. Being the drummer I am these are a dream come true. I’ve only dipped my hand in the pool with these guys but my 1st impression is “damn thats nice”.
As a test I let my Flame clockwork & Moog voyager run random & got behind the drum kit to play along. I stuck one OS on the drum bus, & one on the Moog bus. The drum bus OS really brings out some resonance & glued punch to the kit. The other added some nice dirt/body to the synth. I’ll share more “analytical” thoughts/test files shortly once i’m off my gear high, but all in all these things just sound great & have a feature set I’ve been needing for some time now. Highly recommend.
Audio Examples. (FYI – Lowend/Sub is a bit out of control)

AKG C 414 B-ULS vs Earthworks SR78 for drum overhead applications.
by rhythminmind on Apr.19, 2010, under 2. Tools, Mics
I wanted to see how the 414 & SR78 measured up for overhead duties. Both work exceptionally well but with drastically different outcomes. I personally prefer the SR78′s. By design they roll off the lowend when not used as close spot mics. This is perfect when used with other individual drum mics. If one had to only use two mics, then the 414 would be a much fuller sound. With my setup I prefer the improved mid&high end clarity from the SR78′s when used in conjunction with others in a mix. Rides just sing with the sr78′s

Ratting up that drum bus. (Drum distortion)
by rhythminmind on Apr.19, 2010, under 2. Tools, Processors
I’m a fan of over the top drum sounds. Sometimes full on distortion is what a track calls for. One of my favorite tools for this is the RAT Deucetone. (as the clueless guitar snob salesman called it “douchetone”). I enjoy the power of analog distortion. It’s a great duel input distortion stompbox that is just begging to be used on a bus insert.

The Musician::

Forever seeking truer expression, Rhythm & Pulse have been my instinctual starting point for music. From childhood, being quiet and precocious, I took note of the sonic world around me that triggered my lifelong study.
Drums & Percussion have been the keystone of my life. My evolving tools of trade have and will always vary. I am an experimentalist at heart, but with a deep underlying respect for the foundation of all informed experimentalism: traditionalism.
I combine live playing, natural acoustics, & programed synthesis. Having studied under some great Musicians, my urge to learn & focus on what I can’t currently do constantly gives me creative drive. It frees me from ever growing complacent. Everything should be a work in progress.
This individualistic, ever-questing for knowledge attitude of mine has led me to be in a variety of differently focused bands and music collaborations. From rock, jazz, Celt, Middle Eastern, Indian tabla, to of course electro-industrial, & improvisational freeform. My versatility in drumming is something I’m proud of.

Mixer/Audio engineer::

My aforementioned learn-from-the-ground-up attitude has also led me to obtain a broad knowledge of Audio Engineering, which is the field in which I spend my days. I’ve been in and out of recording studios, actively producing and engineering for close to two decades. I’m an experienced Tracking/Mix/Mastering engineer for music & post production sessions and have produced music and sound design for film, web, & commercial spots, currently working at POP Sound a surround mixing house for film, music, and advertising located in Santa Monica, California.
