I scored myself a pair of original Wahrenbrock PZM Microphones. I have never used or really known of them until recently. I’m amazed there not more of a studio standard. I built a “Wedge” for them over the weekend. You can learn more about that Via – This.

I can’t wait to use them as tracking room mics.

No EQ raw mic output.

Compaholic part 2.

I’ve induced 3 others I recorded for test purposes. (Prophet 08 , Udu, & Tabla.)

I record a lot of hard percussion, Udu & Tabla are the hardest to get to sit in a mix. They have very FAST attack with sustain at times. It’s hard to get both to translate. Anyways I recorded some BS perc noodling to see how the OS would handle them.. I’m impressed. Checkout the end of the Udu test, The low doom sounds have a nice harmonic/grit added to them from the OS.

I just acquired two OverStayer “OS” stereo FET compressors. Being the drummer I am these are a dream come true. I’ve only dipped my hand in the pool with these guys but my 1st impression is “damn thats nice”.

As a test I let my Flame clockwork & Moog voyager run random & got behind the drum kit to play along. I stuck one OS on the drum bus, & one on the Moog bus. The drum bus OS really brings out some resonance & glued punch to the kit. The other added some nice dirt/body to the synth. I’ll share more “analytical” thoughts/test files shortly once i’m off my gear high, but all in all these things just sound great & have a feature set I’ve been needing for some time now. Highly recommend.

I’m a fan of over the top drum sounds. Sometimes full on distortion is what a track calls for. One of my favorite tools for this is the RAT Deucetone. (as the clueless guitar snob salesman called it “douchetone”). I enjoy the power of analog distortion. It’s a great duel input distortion stompbox that is just begging to be used on a bus insert.

AKG C 414 B-ULS vs Earthworks SR78 for drum overhead applications.

I wanted to see how the 414 & SR78 measured up for overhead duties. Both work exceptionally well but with drastically different outcomes. I personally prefer the SR78′s. By design they roll off the lowend when not used as close spot mics. This is perfect when used with other individual drum mics. If one had to only use two mics, then the 414 would be a much fuller sound. With my setup I prefer the improved mid&high end clarity from the SR78′s when used in conjunction with others in a mix. Rides just sing with the sr78′s

Overview

What is this all about your wondering? Well it’s all about LoFi AKAI chunk. There is just something about the AKAI Sampling & hardware down-sampling process that sounds damn cool. These are drum hit samples of the two notorious TR Rhythm Composers via an AKAI S20.

Sampled @ the S20s native rate of 16bit/32khz, then internally down-sampled to 16khz & recaptured @ 24bit/96khz via Lynx converters. HiFi LoFi

Overview

The Drumcomputer MFB-522 is an all analog boutique Drum Synth. It’s deceivingly small size produces HUGE sound. A call back to the TR-808. If you want the 808 vibe but are sick of the overused 808 samples available, this is for you.

9 analog instruments captured @ 24bit/96k & RNLA compression for a little added edge.
Five/Six individual velocity samples per instrument.

Overview

This is the 2nd Moog Drum Sample Set & Live 8 Drum Rack “Moog Drum Two”. (The 1st can be downloaded HERE.) You will find some nice deep tones in this set. Think 808 if it had a Minimoog filter. I’ve created pitch macros for each sample. Being that it is sampled @ 96k you have plenty of room to re-pitch those samples without quality loss for music production.

Captured @ 24bit/96k with Lynx converters & DBX 903 compression.

Analog Signal path = Moog Voyager-DBX 903′s-Console EQ-Dominator II- Lynx.

Overview

The Minimoog Voyager RME is an analog waveform sculpting masterpiece, especially with the add-on CV breakouts. Unlike many classic analog drum machines, the Voyager with its dual filters can create wonderful stereo imagery. I’ve taken the time to program detailed percussive patches & from these i’m creating sample sets. This is the 1st “Moog Drum One” Samples Pack / Drum Rack for Ableton Live 8. (The 2nd can be downloaded HERE.)

Update: I’ve created pitch macros for each sample. Being that it is sampled @ 96k you have plenty of room to re-pitch those samples without quality loss for music production.
